Seniors & disabled: reduced fare breakdown
New York's MTA makes transit more affordable for those 65 + and riders with qualifying disabilities: instead of full price, they pay half fare, which is $1.45 on subways and local buses.
The reduced-fare benefit works via Reduced-Fare OMNY, where eligible riders tap a registered card, credit/debit, or mobile device and receive the discount. MetroCard-based reduced-fare options remain for some until full OMNY transition.
To enroll, seniors and people with disabilities submit proof of age or documentation of disability. As of April 2024, those 65+ can now apply and receive a Reduced-Fare card on the same day at Customer Service Centers.
Limitations still apply: the discount doesn't cover express buses during peak times, and there may be lag time during the OMNY transition for new applicants.
